All of the culture, none of the fat

We should rename this trip "Consuming our way to Alaska".

We drove into Portland today to shop at the haberdashery, but before we started that arduous task we fueled up at Blue Star Donuts. We first heard about this eatery on my favorite Cooking Channel show "Unique Sweets". Sue just had to have the Blueberry Basil Bourbon donut. She thought it was a hit.

There's no fat in donuts, right? But tons of culture in this 38' copper statue of Portlandia.

Downtown Portland is not that big so we left our trusty steed Thor (who doesn't name their truck?) by Blue Star and hoofed it to John Helmer Haberdasher. I'm on the hunt for a Riverboat Gambler style hat. They had some but they didn't fit right. I think I'd also look good in a stylin' beaver felt hat, which they also had, but they weren't perfect either. We were in and out of there in under an hour- empty handed. So sad. There's always Seattle!

We aren't really city people so after hiking around town for a couple hours we called it quits. There sure are a lot of smokers around here. We aren't used to seeing that so it really stands out.

  1. The trip looks fabulous and beautiful. Do they serve a good cup of coffee with that donut? Looks like you are hitting all the good spots to enjoy retirement. The gang from Champions said to say Hi and wished they were there. Your pic does make it like I'm there. Keep up the fun and pics

  2. The coffee was good in fact. Stumptown Roasters is here in Portland and it's served everywhere around here. Sue says they serve it at the Bru, so you can tell me!

  3. Dave only an hour in the hat shop. You must be off your game....what happened? Are you feeling under the weather or is 7 hats enough to get you to Alaska? Maybe on the way back home you can pick a few.

  4. The thing about hat shopping is that each shop has very similar styles. Since I have so many hats (I actually brought 9 with me) there aren't many left to chose from. I mean, how many fedoras does one man need?

Now, if I were Bernice shopping for shoes, that'd be a different story.

  5. You are SO lucky Bernice is having problems leaving comments on the blog. But she's working on it, so standby...

Seriously? Only an hour in the hat shop? And no hats purchased? Who are you and what have you done with Dave?

  6. I would really like a beaver hat, but they're sooo expensive it's only going to happen if it is absolutely perfect. we'll see what Seattle has.
